“Home” is the place where each of us retires to charge their batteries, the space they feel protected and can relax with their loved ones. The current challenge was to turn an old, dark and cold home into the home of the four family members, each with their wishes and needs. A house always has its personality, which the designer has to take into account, in order to achieve a harmonious arrangement integrated into the existing space. The same was the case for this project, the design style chosen being the common denominator between the house architecture and the minimalist design desired by the beneficiaries. Thus, the comfort-oriented simplicity offered by the Scandinavian design was the most appropriate fitting direction, as agreed by us and the owners. The cold, dark and dark halls with a not too generous height and cement and mosaic flooring, as well as the steps to upstairs, were the first challenge I had come from entering the house. The white paint and supplementing artificial lighting have solved the problem of darkness and pressure beforehand. With the floor, however, it was not that easy. A solution has been sought to cover the existing mosaic as simply as possible, excluding the removal of it from the desire of the beneficiaries to intervene as little as possible on the house as a whole. We needed a thin material that would not greatly lift the height of the hallways to the rooms, because the owners opted for the preservation and refurbishment of the original wood flooring. It also wanted a non-skidding material, friendly to the barefoot and hurried feet of children, but also easy to clean and durable. The unanimously agreed solution was to choose a PVC residential traffic carpet with a dynamic design, a contrasting gray-gray and dark gray grille, according to the style of the arrangement, which we chose to use and to cover counter-adjustments from the staircase to the floor. The irregular shape of the stairs and their different sizes have made us use only gray-colored PVC for these surfaces to lose as much of the existing differences. The simplicity desired by the owners has been restored through the agreed concept of design. Thus, we have chosen a unitary range of finishing materials, which we have subsequently used in many places in the house, offering continuity of fitting. One rectangular, white-glossy rectangular faceted tiles was designed to offer both brightness and spaciousness to rather small bathrooms, as well as fitting into the classical Nordic design of kitchen furniture. For all the hallways, the same finishes were used, namely white paint and PVC in two shades, for the vestibule, the closet and the balcony transformed into a laundry room was chosen a grey ceramic cladding, and the rooms remained the restored natural wood flooring. The chosen furniture offers mainly comfort, the beneficiaries opting for practical bodies, easy to move and re-set according to their activities. In the living room, for example, you can stay with your family on a daily basis or have dinner with guests at different events in the year, and the reconfiguration of the space can be done easily by the recipients. If the ground floor is designed for the living area, it consists of a vestibule for outdoor clothing and footwear, a living room for family reunions in relaxing moments, a working desk, a bathroom and a kitchen with a dining area, the floor takes over the functions of the area night with the three bedrooms, matrimonial and two more for children, the main bathroom and the area for washing and drying of the laundry. The chambers of the children were adapted to the age and needs of each of them, the chosen colors being playful and cheerful, as are the children. For wall finishing, a washable lime with writing effect was chosen to give them as much space as possible to express age-specific creativity. In the matrimonial bedroom, however, for added elegance in the room, a pastel wallpaper was chosen, in a degradation of warm and delicate shades. The third level of the house, the attic also underwent the greatest transformation, being completely changed its destination, from the unfinished bridge, with the role of storage, in the living area, fully finished and equipped with heating, air conditioning , sewage and running water. The newly created generous room has taken over the functions of a hobby area for the entire family, providing privacy to both children and adults by creating two somewhat separate spaces for the various recreational activities of all. We chose the carpet of the entire surface to provide extra warmth, comfort and to facilitate games and activities on the floor. The whole arrangement of this house and its story, from the dark and cold image to the warm and welcoming atmosphere, has been the result of a team work for nearly a year combining technical skills with artistic skills, practical solutions with aesthetic vision, without omitting the budget factor, which we always have as a unit of measure in approaching any project.
